Original Yellow Leaf Baptist Church destroyed by fire

The original church sanctuary of Yellow Leaf Baptist Church, located on County Road 435 off of Highway 334 near Camp Lake Stephens, was destroyed by a fire that was reported about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The original sanctuary, which was erected in 1946, is used for children’s church services, according to a church member on the scene.

The attached fellowship hall was also destroyed in the fire.

The current Yellow Leaf Baptist Church located nearby was not damaged.

The fire is believed to be weather related.

One person on the scene said he could see an orange glow from Fudgetown Road as he drove to the church.

Lafayette County firemen remained on the scene as of 12:10 a.m. on Friday.

Seven Lafayette County fire trucks and 38 firemen responded to the fire.

They were assisted by a ladder truck from the Oxford Fire Department.
