Oxford Film Festival will be screening Crimes of the Heart on Saturday at Locals at 309 North Lamar Blvd. from 6—8 p.m. All are welcome to attend this free event.
Once nominated for a Golden Globe award, Crimes of the Heart is renowned for its hybrid of humor and drama. The event is sponsored by Mississippi Humanities Council and co-hosted by the Sarah Isom Center. After the screening, a panel titled The Southern Gothic Tragedy and Family will open for discussion.
“Crimes of the Heart is that most delicate of undertakings: a comedy about serious matters. It exists somewhere between parody and melodrama, the tragic and the goofy. There are moments where the movie does not seem to know where it’s going but for once that’s a good thing because the uncertainty almost always ends some kind of delightful, weird surprise,” film critic Roger Erbert said in a review.
“This has always been one of my favorite films and I am sure that all who come to see the screening will love it as well,” said Melanie Addington, executive director of the Oxford Film Festival. “This screening along with many other events happen because of the ongoing support from Mississippi Humanities Council and the Sarah Isom Center. As a non-profit, their recognition and time has allowed us to foster a presence of arts in the Oxford community.”
The Oxford Film Festival was founded in 2003 to bring exciting, new and unusual films (and the people who create them) to North Mississippi. The annual five-day festival screens short and feature-length films in both showcase and competition settings, including narrative and documentary features and shorts; Mississippi narratives, documentaries and music videos, and narrative, documentary, animated and experimental shorts. The festival is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization.
