Ole Miss basketball cruises past Rice

Ole Miss didn’t leave Las Vegas empty-handed.

Deandre Burnett scored a team-high 18 points while Terence Davis had 15 points, leading the Rebels past Rice 79-62 in the consolation game of the MGM Grand Main Event at T-Mobile Arena on Wednesday.

Freshman Devontae Shuler added 13 points for Ole Miss (4-1), which rebounded from its first loss of the season against Utah on Monday. The Rebels, who led 40-35 at halftime, opened the second half on an 8-0 run to grab a double-digit lead and cruised from there, leading by as many as 23 points.

Connor Cashaw scored a game-high 24 points, but no other player for Rice (1-4) had more than eight points as Ole Miss clamped down defensively. Ole Miss held the Owls to 33 percent shooting from the field (21 of 63) and just 22.6 percent (7 of 31) from 3-point range.

Ole Miss shot 48.3 percent from the floor (29 of 60) and made 12 3-pointers with three apiece from Shuler, Burnett and Davis, who combined to make half of their shots (16 of 32) from the field. Burnett added eight assists and five rebounds while Justas Furmanavicius went 4 of 4 from the field to finish with nine points.

Ole Miss will return to The Pavilion on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip against South Dakota State.
