The Lafayette County Fire Department battled several fires in the median on Highway 6 East that stretched from the Pontotoc County line to the Denmark area.

The fires started after two tires fell off an 18-wheeler truck, causing sparks to ignite the dry grass in the median.

Nine fire trucks responded from Lafayette County at about 4:16 p.m. on Wednesday and firefighters battled the fires for more than an hour.

At one point, sparks from the fire jumped over to the highway and caused a small brush fire which was quickly contained and extinguished by firefighters.

Fire officials said no one was injured from the fire.
