The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department investigated a shooting Thursday after a 13-year-old juvenile fired a shotgun inside a house, wounding a 66-year-old man sitting outside.

According to Chief Investigator Alan Wilburn, deputies responded to 142 County Road 104, commonly known as College Hill Switch, where they learned the victim was sitting outside of his home when the teen was apparently playing with an older model double barrel 20 gauge shotgun inside the house when it accidentally went off.

The bird shot pellets made their way through the interior wall and hit the older man in the head.

Wilburn said the man was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi with what appeared to be nonlife-threatening injuries; however, head injuries are serious and a victim’s condition can change quickly.

Wilburn said the shooting appeared accidental and that no charges were being filed “at this time.”
