Betsy Jewel Poole Aloway, 85, died Sunday, June 17, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. The funeral service will be held Friday, June 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Hope, Rev. Randy Bain and Rev. Hilton Lane officiating. Burial will follow in Abbeville Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening, June 21, 2018, in West Hall at Waller Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m.
Born in Greenville, Miss., Mrs. Aloway was first and foremost a faithful Christian woman and a member of First Baptist Church, Abbeville, where she served as church clerk, substitute Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. She graduated Cum Laude from the University of Mississippi. She served as the Mayor of Abbeville for over 30 years. She was the owner of Furniture World in Oxford. She was top sales person for Furniture Centers Company in the state of Mississippi, listed as Outstanding Business Woman of the year in 1981-82 and one of Mississippi’s 50 leading businesswomen in 2006. Mrs. Aloway’s other accomplishments include being a community writer for the Oxford Eagle and having recipes published in the Southern Living. She was a mother and grandmother who taught her child and grandchildren to love the Lord, be respectful of others and to work hard for what they earned. She was a hard worker who overcame many obstacles to achieve her goals. She was never hesitant to provide help to someone in need. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Eugene “Bob” Aloway.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Aloway Klepzig and her husband, Joe of Abbeville, and two grandchildren, Magan Kent and her husband, Will of Abbeville and Morgan Kepzig of Abbeville.
