One person passed away in a Wednesday morning house fire that occurred on Highway 334.
The Lafayette County Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 10:24 a.m., with the first of six fire apparatuses responding at 10:35 a.m.
Members of the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. According to a statement from the sheriff’s department, the body of a male in his early 80s was found in the home.
According to Lafayette County Fire Coordinator Wes Anderson, the fire was large enough that it took four engines and two tankers to be extinguished.
“It was reported that the structure fire was 40 to 50 percent involved,” Anderson said. “Due to the fact that there was a fatality, the state fire marshal’s office is also involved in the investigation.”
Because the fire is still under investigation, neither the victim’s name nor the address has been released. However, the sheriff’s department said they do not believe that foul play was involved. Anderson also confirmed that no one else was in the home at the time of the incident.
After the fire was extinguished, the victim’s body was turned over to the Lafayette County Coroner to be transported to Jackson for an autopsy.
This is a developing story.
