Obituary – George Thomas “G.T.” Wilburn

George Thomas “G.T.” Wilburn, 73, died Thursday, Feb.  28, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi in Oxford. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at 2 p.m. with Bro. Joseph Lachausse and Bro. Davy Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Old Union Cemetery in Oxford, Mississippi. The visitation was held Friday, March 1, 2019, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.at the funeral home.

 

Born in Oxford, Mississippi, to the late William Elam and Wanda Baird Wilburn, G.T. retired from the University of Mississippi as the director of Custodial Services. He was a member of the Laws Hill Church of Christ and, back in the day, an avid coon hunter. G.T. loved his family and would not let a day go by without visiting with his friends at the Abbeville Market. A jokester and prankster, if he liked you then he picked on you and he never met a stranger.

G.T. is survived by his wife of 55 years, Hilda Fowler Wilburn, of Abbeville, Mississippi; sons, Christopher Thomas Wilburn and his wife, Dawn of Pontotoc, Mississippi, and William “Bill” Haywood Wilburn and his wife, Cathy of Oxford; sisters, Jean Jones, Ruth Hadorn and Sandra Allen; brother, Robert Wilburn and Ray Wilburn all of Abbeville; six grandchildren, Keith Parker (Tricia) of Southaven, Mississippi, Michael Parker (Newt) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ciara Swords (Staff Sargent Will) of Ft. Benning, Georgia, Taylor House (Brandon) of Abbeville; Courtney Pruitt (Barron) of Oxford,, and Erica Shields (Corbin) of Brandon, Mississippi, and four great grandchildren, Easton Swords of Ft. Benning, Nathan and Jaxon House of Abbeville, and Sawyer Pruitt of Oxford.
