Graduation is a month away, but seniors of Oxford High School already know who is sitting at the top of their class. The Oxford School District announced the Valedictorian and Salutatorian for OHS’ Class of 2019 on Monday.
Seniors Marawan Elgohry and Siena Cizdziel were named Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectfully.
A grade point average of 4.69, Elgohry leads the Class of 2019. During his time at Oxford High School, he has earned recognition as a National Speech & Debate (NSDA) All-American and a two-time Ocean Bowl National Competitor. Upon graduating from OHS, Elgohry will attend Emory University in Atlanta this fall where he plans to study economic statistics.
“(I’m) looking forward to the new challenges that come with rigorous academic courses, especially in my chosen field of match,” Elgorhy said of attending Emory. “I’m very excited to learn new techniques, new material and new levels of analysis that come with these classes. …(I would tell underclassmen to) start assignments early, as doing so has always made my life easier.”
Elgohry is the son of Moustafa Elgohry and Mona Haron.
Finishing a close second to Elgohry with a GPA of 4.57, Cizdziel accumulated several accolades during her time at OHS. She served as the Envirothon captain, placing 6th and 8th in international competitions, the Lincoln-Douglas Debate captain, two-time NSDA qualifier, Intel International Science & Engineering Fair finalist and is an MIT Women’s Technology Program alumni.
“Im looking forward to the wide array of classes that I’ll be able to take at a liberal arts college in subjects I’ve never really been exposed to before, like bioethics in law or philosophy,” Cizdziel said of going to Yale. “I absolutely love the interdisciplinary nature of Yale.”
Cizdziel plans to attend Yale University in the fall, where she will study engineering. She is the daughter of James and Liming Cizdziel.
Oxford High School will celebrate the Class of 2019 with its graduation ceremony on May 24 inside the Tad Smith Coliseum, located on the University of Mississippi campus. Both Elgohry and Cizdziel will lead the Commencement.
