The new school year is less than a month away, which means school supply lists will be posted on websites and at Walmart soon.
In an effort to make sure every student has what they need to begin the year, the Oxford Police Department is hosting a supply drive.
A ‘Pack the Patrol Car’ event will be held on July 26 from noon to 7 p.m. at the Walmart parking lot on West Jackson Avenue. An empty patrol car will be parked outside of Walmart and people will be able to donate school supplies that will then be placed inside the car.
The event was an idea that came from interim Police Chief Jeff McCutchen.
“We are always trying to think of ways to give back to the community and with school starting right around the corner we know there are children who need school supplies,” OPD Captain Hildon Sessums said. “We hope to fill a patrol car to the roof liner with school supplies for this upcoming year.”
McCutchen also contacted the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department regarding the school supply drive and they will also be participating in the event.
