After years of planning, budgeting and construction, Oxford’s new downtown parking garage is open. The four-level garage opened at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, three days after it was initially scheduled to be completed.
The delay was due to what City officials described as an electrical glitch and had to order a part in from Atlanta earlier this week. Friday’s opening marks the completion of the $12 million project for the Downtown Square.
The garage houses around 400 spaces, with 90 additional spaces in the surface lot surrounding it.
With the amended parking ordinance not taking effect until Oct. 7, all four levels of the parking garage will be free until then.
On Sept. 30, the City will begin selling four monthly parking permits. The first floor of the garage will require a valid permit, while the remaining floors will continue to be free to park. All parking spots on the first floor will be metered for anyone without a permit.
