With the reopening of businesses and an increased number of tests being administered, Lafayette County has seen a small surge in COVID-19 cases in the last few days.

With Tuesday’s report of three new cases in Lafayette County by the Mississippi State Department of Health, there have been 10 new cases reported in the last four days. Monday was the only day no new cases were reported in Lafayette County.

The county’s totals are 126 cases, three deaths and 37 cases at long-term care facilities since Lafayette reported its first positive case on March 19. According to data on The City of Oxford’s website, there were 24 active cases as of May 23.

After reporting over 400 new cases last Friday, Mississippi’s statewide daily case total has begun to slowly decrease again. The MSDH reported 273 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the state’s total to 13,731 since March 11. Of those, approximately 9,401 Mississippians are presumed to have recovered as of May 24.

There have been 147,819 COVID-19 tests administered, giving Mississippi a 9.2-percent infection rate among those tested as of May 24. There have also been over 6,800 antibody tests administered across the state, according to MSDH.

Mississippi saw its highest number of people on ventilators on Saturday, with 94 of the 421 Mississippians hospitalized due to the coronavirus using the machines. The number dropped on Sunday, with 388 people in the hospital and 81 people on ventilators statewide.
