Oxford Police Department wants to remind everyone to stay safe this Fourth of July.

Oxford residents are gearing up to celebrate Independence Day from their homes this year, with most of the usual community celebrations canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, OPD police chief Jeff McCutchen said he wants to remind residents about the regulations of shooting fireworks.

“It is illegal to shoot fireworks inside the city, according to Sec. 38-123 city ordinance code,” McCutchen said. “It’s a misdemeanor fine, with the fine amount being imposed by the judge.”

The City of Oxford announced in earlier in June that their firework display will take place in the back parking lot of Oxford High School on July 3 at 9 p.m.

OPD would also like to remind people who plan on drinking alcoholic beverages this Fourth of July to have a plan.

“Prepare to use ride-shares or stop by the Safe Site tent so we can help you get a ride home,” McCutchen said. “We will have officers out looking for impaired drivers.”

OPD’s Safe Site tent is located on the Square, in front of the Visit Oxford office.

State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney laid out some safety tips in a newsletter for Mississippians looking to shoot fireworks at home.

“There may be more personal use of fireworks at homes and in neighborhoods than usual, as many public fireworks displays are canceled because of the coronavirus,” Chaney said. “I hope that Mississippians will use caution if they handle fireworks and follow the safety tips laid out below.”

Safety tips include:

  • Observe local laws
    • Those wishing to purchase and use fireworks should first check with their fire protection officials to make sure that local laws are being followed as some municipalities prohibit fireworks from being used within city limits
  • Use common sense: always read and follow the directions on each firework
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person
  • Buy from reliable fireworks sellers. Store them in a cool, dry place.
  • Always have an adult present when shooting fireworks
  • Put used fireworks in a bucket of water and have a hose ready.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass and trees
  • Light only one item at a time and keep a safe distance
  • Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks
  • Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Never give fireworks to small children.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
