Lafayette run-rules South Panola 16-1 on Saturday

The Lafayette Commodores defeated the South Panola Tigers 16-1 on Saturday at home.

Lafayette (17-6) broke the game open with an eight-run fourth inning against South Panola. Lafayette had four singles in the frame to score the runs.

South Panola scored their only run in the first inning.

Lafayette quickly erased the Tigers’ 1-0 advantage as they plated five runs of their own in the home half of the first. The Commodores scored three runs on a double to left by Foster Crocket.

Crocket finished the game going 2-for-2 with a double, scoring a run and four RBIs.

The Commodores starter Waller Smith didn’t allow the run in the first to get him off his game. Smith picked up the win by working 3.0 innings surrendering a run on a hit with three walks and two strikeouts.

In the third, Lafayette added three more runs to the scoreboard on a double by Campbell Atkinson making it 8-1 in favor of the Commodores.

Atkinson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a  double, a run and four RBIs.

Lafayette brought Jake Melton into the game who pitched the fourth. Melton didn’t allow a run on no hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

In the fifth, Nick Kagey took the mound to face the Tigers. Kagey tossed an inning of scoreless baseball with two hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

Lafayette returns to the diamond on Tuesday as they welcome in West Point. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
