D.K. Metcalf to undergo minor knee surgery

The D.K. Metcalf hype train in Seattle is taking a bit of a setback.

After showing up on the sideline for Sunday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings in sweats, the team announced afterward that the rookie wideout and Ole Miss product would be undergoing a minor knee surgery this week in Seattle.

“We’re disappointed for him because he was off to a fantastic start, but I don’t think this is going to derail him for long,” head coach Pete Carroll told reporters after the game. “But he does have to have some work done.”

It’s believed the injury took place in last week’s preseason game. Despite the grim sound of the phrase “knee injury,” all is not lost. Carroll told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that doctors expect a quick recovery from the rookie. While they didn’t give a timetable, Carroll said they are optimistic they’ll have Metcalf on the field for week one on Sept. 8.

After being selected by the Seahawks in the second round back in April, all reports out of Seattle camp on Metcalf have been positive. He seemed to be prepared to step right into one of the starting wideout roles on a team missing Doug Baldwin after his sudden retirement. He’ll now be dealing with the first setback of his professional career.
