Supervisors District 2 race adds one more, as Justice Court adds competition

There’s been a slow in the number of names entering races for office in Lafayette County, but residents are still announcing their intentions to run.

On the updated list of Lafayette County candidates, Joshua McGlawn and Emily Smathers Ratliff are running for office on the Board of Supervisors and Justice Court.

McGlawn’s entrance is notable, as he’s joining a stacked, seven-person race for the Supervisors’ District 2 seat. He’s running as a Democrat, along with six other candidates on the seven-person race.

The District 2 seat is an open race due to current District 2 Supervisors and board president Jeff Busby announcing his intentions to run for Lafayette County Circuit Clerk.

Larry Gillespie is running as the only Republican, while J.E. Neilson, Ava Halon Bonds Gossett, Leslie Spence, Maxwell Hill and Darryl L. Booker will all run as Democratic candidates.

McGlawn will face off against those six Democratic candidates in a primary election on August 6.

Smathers Ratliff enters a sparser race candidate wise for the office of Justice Court Judge Northern, but she’ll also take place in the primary race as well.

Smathers Ratliff is running against Andy Turner Arant Jr. and the incumbent Carolyn Pettis Bell. Smathers Ratliff and Andy Turner Arant Jr. will also square off in the August 6 primary.

The general election for all county offices is on November 5.
