VIDEO: Coaches talk Oxford-Wayne Co. state title matchup

CLINTON — Oxford is still looking for its first football state championship ever. Wayne County is searching for its first in nine years.

The teams will meet Saturday night to determine which one comes out on top in the MHSAA Class 5A title game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford. It will be the final game of the six championship matchups set to be played out over the course of two days starting Friday at Ole Miss’ stadium with kickoff set for 7.

The Chargers (12-2) beat West Point 35-7 in the North Half championship last week to earn their third straight championship game berth. Wayne County (11-3) is back in the title game for the first time since 2009 following its 55-27 win over defending state champion Laurel.

It’s a rematch of the 2003 title game when both teams were members of the 4A classification, and both coaches — Oxford’s Johnny Hill and Wayne County’s Todd Mangum — were on staff then. Hill led Oxford to its first-ever state championship game appearance that season while Mangum, now the War Eagles’ head coach, was the defensive coordinator for Wayne County in its 30-3 victory.

The coaches for all of this year’s title game participants convened at the MHSAA central office in Clinton on Monday for a championship press conference. Watch Hill and Mangum talk about this year’s matchup and that game 12 years ago in the videos below.
