Oxford Swim sends 17 to state meet

The Oxford High School swim team took 27 athletes to the North Half finals this weekend at Delta State.

Seventeen of those 27 will be competing at the state championship meet at Tupelo this weekend, after qualifying at the North Half.

Both the girls and boys Charger teams finished third overall at the North Half finals, with the girls team just one point off of second place. Individually, Julia Dennis led the way for Oxford by winning both the 50- and 200-meter freestyle, one of 17 Chargers who swam fast enough times to individually qualify for the state meet.

The weekend proved to be a fast one all around for Oxford, as they also set two school records in relay events. The team of Ellinor Maxwell, Cole Oyler, Madeline Homan and Julia Dennis broke the school record in the 400 Freestyle relay with a time of 3:54.72. The boys 200 medley relay of Charles Byars, Will Carrington, Neil Cipkowski and Vance Byars also set the school record, with a time of 1:44.14.
