Small explosion at Winchester injures 3

Emergency responders from both the city and county responded to a small explosion at Winchester on Tuesday afternoon, which injured a few workers at the plant.

Oxford and Lafayette County Departments responded to a call of a small explosion in one of the beams at the Winchester, an ammunitions manufacturer, at about 1:30 p.m., according to the Oxford Fire Department.

OFD reported there was no fire in the building, and remained on the scene to clear smoke from the building. There were only  three injuries as a result of the explosion, and no one was seriously injured.

Those three workers were transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital without life-threatening injuries.

Three fire trucks and two ambulances were on scene as workers watched from the parking lot as smoke vented from a section of the roof.

Emergency responders cleared the scene by 2:45, and workers were seen returning to the plant shortly after.

UPDATE: Original reports were that four workers were injured in the explosion. A report from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s office confirmed three were injured non critically.
