Lady Commodores place third in 2-4A meet

The Lafayette High girls track team finished third in the Region 2-4A meet Saturday in Pontotoc while both the girls and boys had numerous qualifiers for this week’s North Half championships.
Lafayette’s girls, with the help of a first-place finish by sprinter Orianna Shaw, racked up 67 points. Shaw won the 400 meters with a time of 59.5 seconds.
Shaw also took second place in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100 meters to qualify for North Half in those events. Xhiir Burgess placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 16 feet while finishing third in the triple jump with a distance of 33-5.
Mariah Holland (32-4) placed second in the shot put while Anja Diercks (4-6) qualified with a fourth-place finish in the high jump. The girls’ 4×200 and 4×800 relay teams also qualified with second- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
The Commodores’ boys qualified for five North Half events led by freshman Brandon Turnage’s win in the high jump with a clearance of 6-2. Turnage also took second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08 while Douglas Tanner (20-5) took second in the long jump. The 4×800 team finished third, and the 4×400 team finished fourth.
The 4A North Half meets will be held Saturday at Tishomingo County.
