Mr. John “J.T.” Gunter, 79, died Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at his home in the Old Union Community. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Rush officiating. Burial will follow in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday evening from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home.

Born in Lafayette County, to the late William Thomas and Alma Bramlett Gunter, Mr. Gunter was a member of Old Union Baptist Church, a police officer for the University of Mississippi and worked as a foreman for Emerson Electric.  He served as an Airman in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenny Wayne Gunter and Walter Ray Gunter.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Hughes Gunter of the Old Union Community in Mississippi; a daughter, Regena Lynn Gunter and her wife, Andrea Hall of Nashville, Tennessee; two sons, William Robert “Bill” Gunter and his wife, Tammy of Abbeville, and Ricky Ray Gunter and his fiancé, Debbie Forrest of Oxford; a sister, Brenda Viola Daulton of Winchester, Ohio; a brother, Gary Paul Gunter of Horn Lake; one grandchild, Samantha Lee Summey and one great-grandchild, Aden Dale Summey.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Gunter’s memory may be made to the cemetery fund at Old Union Baptist Church, 180 CR 434, Oxford, MS 38655.

In honor of Mr. Gunter’s service to his country, the flag of the United States Air Force will be flown at Waller Funeral Home.
