Water Valley routs Coahoma AHS, clinches playoff berth

Water Valley is running through their Region 2-3A opponents. Because of it they have punched their ticket to the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs for the second straight year.
The Blue Devils traveled to Clarksdale and defeated Coahoma AHS 41-0 on Friday. The game was played at James E. Miller Stadium on the campus of Coahoma Community College.
Once again Water Valley (8-1, 3-0 2-3A) jumped on their opponent in the first half, putting the game out of reach before halftime. The Blue Devils scored 34 points in the first two quarters.
Four different players scored for Water Valley in the first half. Running back Tay Rucker scored two rushing touchdowns from distances of 28 yards and one yard, respectively. Jacob Truss also scored on the ground with a 22-yard run in the second quarter.
Quarterback Blayne Clark threw for a touchdown pass, connecting with Jacob Welch from nine yards out in the second quarter.
Special teams played a big role in the game as well. Bud Tolbert returned two punts for touchdowns. The first was a 45-yard return midway through the second quarter to put the Blue Devils up 21-0 at the time. The second was a 62-yard return early in the third quarter for the winning margin.
It is the second shutout in region play by the Blue Devil defense, who has only allowed 8 points against M.S. Palmer last week. The offense has outscore their region opponents 132-8 through three games.
Coahoma dropped to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in region play.
Up next for Water Valley is their final home game of the regular season against Independence before traveling to Sardis for a potential region title clash against North Panola on Oct. 26.
