Jewell Gaither Turman, age 94, of Oxford, Mississippi, passed away on Monday, Jan. 14, 2019.  She was born on September 12, 1924, in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Hubert and Jewell Watson Gaither.  She attended the University of Mississippi where she met her husband, Raymond “Ray” Eugene Turman of Horn Lake, Mississippi.  They were married for 73 years before his death on April 24, 2018. They lived in Oxford for the past 18 years and were members of the Oxford-University United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Julie Turman Starr (Walter H.) of Hernando, Mississippi,  and Helen Davis (John) of Jackson, Mississippi; son, John Thomas “Tom” Turman of Southaven, Mississippi; grandchildren, Susan Turman, Julia Garrison Starr, Cannada Andrew “Drew” Lewis; sisters, Julia Gaither Patterson of Memphis, Tennessee, and Betty Gaither Thisted of Huson, Montana; brother, Hubert Gaither (Margaret) of Clifton, Texas; special caregivers, Venita Phillips, Tamika Jones, and Eula Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Turman; her son, Ray Turman, Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Janet Turman; one sister, Mary Ruth Gaither Barnes.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at New Bethlehem Cemetery in Horn Lake, Mississippi.  A memorial service followed in Oxford, Mississippi, at Oxford-University United Methodist Church and visitation was at 1:30 p.m. and was followed by the service at 2:30 p.m.  Hernando Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
