Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche has been suspended for the Sugar Bowl and has chosen to declare for the NFL Draft, head coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement Sunday morning. The 6-foot-4, 296-pound Nkemdiche was the headliner of Ole Miss’ 2013 recruiting class as the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect coming out of Grayson High in Loganville, Georgia.
“Last week, our athletics director and I informed Robert that he will not be joining us for the bowl game,” Freeze said in his statement. “In addition, Robert has decided to declare for the NFL Draft, and we will continue to support him as he prepares for the next chapter in his life. I look forward to sharing with NFL general managers and scouts what a unique and talented individual he is.”
Nkemdiche is widely projected to go in the top half of the first round in next year’s draft, but NFL personnel are likely to grill the troubled standout about the events that led to his fall from a fourth-floor window at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead on Dec. 12 and resulted in a charge of marijuana possession after Atlanta police said they found approximately seven marijuana cigarettes in the room from which he fell.
Nkemdiche was treated for minor injuries at Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital before meeting with investigators. Nkemdiche was found conscious and stable lying on the ground in front of the hotel’s main entrance once police arrived on the scene, though police said it’s unclear what caused Nkemdiche to bust through a double-pane window before falling over two ledges and eventually to the ground.
Freeze said Monday he wanted to gather “all the facts” before making a decision on Nkemdiche’s status. Ole Miss (9-3) will take on Oklahoma State (10-2) in New Orleans on Jan. 1 (7:30 p.m., ESPN).
“While I wish I could have finished this journey with my team, I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this program, and I am ready to begin the next phase of my life,” Nkemdiche said in a statement. “I have learned a valuable lesson in the last week, and I look forward to showing NFL personnel that this is not representative of my true character.”
Nkemdiche, a two-time All-America and All-Southeastern Conference selection, had 29 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks this season. He finished with 98 career tackles and also scored three offensive touchdowns.
