A strong 12 months has gotten Ole Miss’ Braden Thornberry in the mix for the top individual honor in men’s college golf.
Thornberry has been named to the watch list for this year’s Ben Hogan Award, which is awarded annually to the top men’s college golfer at the Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA levels based on all collegiate and amateur tournaments competed in over the last 12 months. Thornberry, a sophomore, is one of 28 candidates determined by the award’s subcommittee.
The award has been given out since 1990. Arizona State’s Jon Rahm won it the last two years.
After medaling in all three tournaments the Rebels’ 12th-ranked golf team won in the fall, Thornberry last weekend won the Jones Cup, the first amateur event of the year, to earn a sponsorship invite to the RSM Classic, a PGA Tour event to be played at Georgia’s Sea Island Golf Club in November. Thornberry is the nation’s leader in stroke average (68.87) heading into Ole Miss’ spring season, which begins Feb. 21 at the Puerto Rico Classic.
